These two paintings capture the idyllic warmth and tranquillity that rests upon the sunlit and unspoilt Berkshire Downs of the late 19th century. Both are inscribed on the stretchers in pencil ‘View Near Windsor’ and signed ‘Vickers’. They are in the manner of Alfred Vickers (1786 – 1868), the patriarch of at least four generations of painters and landscape artists of repute – Alfred Gomersal, Alfred Henry and Alfred Charles. Alfred Vickers was a self-taught, prolific and well-regarded artist who began showing his work in London from 1813, exhibiting a number of his paintings at the Royal Academy from 1831, as well as at the British Institute and the Society of British Artists.
English, circa 1850 – 1880.
The gilt frames are of a later date.
