The Elbogen porcelain factory was founded on the Austrian / Czech border in 1815 by Rudolf K and Eugen K Haidinger. It was named Haideinger Brothers Porcelain Factory in Elbogen, and was also known as Vienna Porcelain and Earthenware Factory. The factory was located in the Czech city of Loket, which was known as Elbogen whilst under Austrian rule. Like Samson of France, the Elbogen workshops produced a number of designs in the eighteenth century manner inspired by Chinese and European models. Towards the end of the 19th century they specialised in producing finely modelled animalia and chinoiserie figures of which this elephant is amongst the most striking.
