BUTTERFLY WOMEN
This is one of the very few designs vignetted against a solid colour ground; fairies appear as rather buxom young ladies of undoubtedly Victorian vintage, whose highly ornate butterfly wings would not lift them a fraction of an inch from the branches on which they are elegantly perched. There are several versions of the Butterfly Women used almost exclusively on all sizes of the Trumpet, sometimes called the Elizabethan vase, and each size of vase has its own particular Butterfly Woman.
The backgrounds are painted solid black overlaid with mother of pearl lustre, the foliage, of an indeterminate botanical family, is green with red blossoms on brown branches, and the Flight of Birds is a creamy-yellow; the ropes of the Women are usually purple and blue.
The inside rims of the vases are decorated with a digitate leaf edge and various elfish creatures riding on birds and butterflies, the largest vase (height is 10 inches) has in addition the Floating Fairies with swinging draperies. The Flight of Birds encircles the neck.
