Rare Parthian Gold and Garnet Earrings
Parthian Empire, c. 2nd century BC-1st century AD.
A beautiful pair of pendant earrings; semi-circular hinged suspension loop (still working) ornamented with four differently shaped garneted plates, consisting of frontal circular shield with pellet border and four heart-shaped garnets arranged radially around central (now missing) garnet, to the left is a large circular garnet with pellet border, at the back are three tear-drop shaped garnet's surmounting circular garnet, each with pellet border, to the right is a diamond-shaped garnet, again with pellet border; conical-form drop with semispherical cap to which suspension loop is attached; six circular garnets run along the top of the drop, each with pellet border; beneath are six inverted tear-drop shaped cut garnets encircling the drop, similarly with pellet border and additional single strand of gold wire; spherical termini at tip of pendant.
A fantastic pair of earrings which are in superb condition.
Would need to be adapted to be worn.
