The Chinese puppeteer provided Jacoulet with the first opportunity to try several innovations. The tunics of the puppets and the puppeteer's hat show a use of overprinting. As many as twenty separate pressings were used to achieve a graduated effect, including experiments with metallics over the dry pigments.
