Provenance: Private Cambridgeshire collection, UK

Melchior d'Hondecoeter was born in Utrecht and his father and grandfather had both been interested in animal painting. His Aunt was married to the painter Jan Baptist Weenix and after studying under his father he was apprenticed to his Uncle Weenix which gave him the opportunity to develop his technique and use of colour. Hondecoeter painted almost exclusively bird subjects, usually exotic or game in park landscapes and his paintings often featured geese such as the Brent goose, Egyptian goose and red-breasted goose, partridges, pigeons, ducks, peacocks, cranes and cockatoos. In addition to his realistic scenes of birds, he also painted wall hangings with views of buildings and parks. Between 1659 and 1663 he was working in The Hague and became a member of the Painters' Academy there. He died in Amsterdam in 1695. Examples of his work can be found in the Wallace Collection and Belton house in England and in public galleries of Berlin, Budapest, Florence, Paris, Rotterdam, Vienna and Warsaw, as well as in many other European cities.
