Fine quality and unusually large 8-inch [210 mm] diameter 19th Century brass-cased aneroid barometer, numbered 30517. The well-engraved silvered brass dial with exposed barometer movement and bearing twin curved thermometers - mercury Fahrenheit and alcohol Réaumur and Centigrade scales, and signed by the retailers, Hay & Lyall of Aberdeen. The case profile exaggeratedly dished, engraved with PHNB logo on verso.


The firm of Pertuis Hulot et Naudet Barometres, was pre-eminent in the manufacture of the aneroid barometers during the 3rd quarter of the 19th Century.
Hay and Lyall was a partnership between brothers-in-law, flourishing from 1856 until Lyall’s death in 1886, and based at 17 Guestrow, Aberdeen. They described themselves as “carvers and gilders to the Queen, printsellers, opticians and artists’ colourmen”
