This very rare item opens up to provide two beakers which are modelled and decorated to simulate a barrel. It is thought that these were used when travelling and also as stirrup cups to toast the hunt at the hunt meet. The quality of this piece is exceptional and the gilded interiors are of the finest quality. Both ends are very well marked and this piece is in excellent condition and is of a very good gauge. This is the first time we have seen a Peter & William Bateman Double Beaker and an identical example, by these silversmiths, is shown in "Hester Bateman" by David Shure, and he also emphasises that these items are rarities from their workshops.
