A fine and rare bookcase by Peter Waals, 1934.
Of Cuban mahogany and Macassar ebony.
The rectangular top with shaped sides with exposed dovetail and mortise joints. With four compartments over two cupboards. Each cupboard with double doors with central recessed chamfered panels.
Each door with dished “D” shaped hands of Macassar ebony.
The whole form set within a Macassar ebony frame on shaped corner projecting feet of Macassar ebony.
United by a conforming moulded stretcher.
Prov; The Goddard Family who patented Goddards silver cleaner in the 19th century.
In the first half of the 20th century the family were great patrons of the Arts and the family commissioned pieces of furniture directly from Peter Waals in the 1920s and 1930s for a new interior scheme for the family home Lyndwood in Leicester.
Part of the family subsequently moved to Biniemyre in Galashiels and these pieces are from this property.
