Perhaps one of the quirkiest objects we have had, this is a true example of 19th century working-man's art. This is a beautifully crafted memento, apparently made by a lover of pigeons, or "pigeon fancier", perhaps to display his successes with his racing pigeons behind the little pane of glass set into the shield, or as a very elaborate picture frame for a loved one. The birds are fashioned from sheet brass as convex silhouettes, and then embellished with engraved decoration, and fit into slots in the stepped wooden base to create this impressive and unusual display.
English, late 19th century.
