Previously thought to represent John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, this portrait probably portrays a member of his circle, dressed in armour to note his involvement in the notable victory on Marshal Tallard’s and the Elector of Bavaria’s army at the Battle of Blenheim in 1704. Although there are some facial similarities between the sitter in this portrait and the Duke, the sitter’s lower jaw is far more pronounced.

This type of larger oil on copper portrait was a hybrid – somewhere between a portrait miniature and small oil painting in scale. Although designed to be hung on the wall, they were produced on a more modest and personal scale than the large and flamboyant oils of the period. The artist of this portrait is unknown but was probably trained in Holland with a British patronage keen to utilise the careful skills and detailed observation of a Dutch hand.
