Edwin Hewgill, son of The Rev. Henry Hewgill, rector of Great Smeaton, Yorkshire, was Secretary to His Royal Highness the Duke of York on the Continent during 1793-94. This portrait of Edwin Hewgill was probably painted shortly after his appointment as Brevet Colonel 26 January 1797. Almost a year later, he was made Deputy Barrack-Master-General to HM Forces December 1798 and then Lieutenant-Colonel in 18th Foot 10 May 1800 (on exchange from Coldstream Foot Guards). He commanded the 19th Foot 1800 to 1803 and became Major-General 1 October 1803. In 1804, he became Lieutenant-Governor of the Scilly Isles.[1] It appears that in his latter years he was a translator, penning a book entitled ‘The Field Engineer’ translated from the German, in 1806.
