The standing figure wears a red hat-button and a peacock on his embroidered rank-badge, which would identify him as a civil official of the second rank. The composition of the picture, with a spare interior with canopy and window above, is similar not only to English portraiture of the mid-eighteenth century, but also to the reverse-glass portraits painted in Canton by the Chinese artist Spoilum and others.
