A fine half-length portrait of a gentleman, circle of Thomas Hudson. The sitter depicted within a feigned oval, dressed as informally as gentleman of leisure stares resolutely out at the viewer. However, his fashionable wig, hint of a gold chain beneath his coat and his high colouring also suggest he enjoyed a good living. The portrait has clearly been executed by an artist of great ability in a similar style to Thomas Hudson.

Thomas Hudson was a successful portrait painter born in Devon in 1701. He moved to London where he studied under Jonathan Richardson and later married the artist’s daughter. He taught Sir Joshua Reynolds and was one of the leading portrait painters of his day. As well as painting portraits of aristocracy and notable figures of the day, he also travelled around Europe and Italy. In 1753 he moved to Twickenham where he spent the rest of his life. He died at Twickenham in 1779.

A number of his works can be found in public collections and art galleries including the Manchester Art Gallery, National Maritime Museum, National Portrait Gallery, the Tate and the National Trust.

The painting is housed in a period carved and giltwood frame, which is in excellent condition.
