Born in Copenhagen, Dorph was privately educated under Harald Slott-Møller and Peter Ilsted in Copenhagen (1893–97) after which she spent a year training in Berlin. In 1907 she won the prestigious Thorvaldsen medal. Bertha Dorph is perhaps best known for her series of Florentine style portraits of children in traditional Scandinavian costume.
