Born in Turin Italy, son of the great portrait painter Jean-Baptiste Van Loo. The family moved to Paris in 1719 when Charles was a baby.
Charles studied portrait painting under his father and went on to develop his own style and by 1747 he had become an Academician in Paris in his own right and in 1770 he was made a professor of the Academy, finally becoming principal in 1790.
He became Court painter to the King of Prussia but still managed to regularly exhibit at the Paris Salon from 1747 to 1785.
Throughout his long career he not only painted portraits but also mythological & historical scenes.
The Louvre in Paris has a large archive of his drawings.
Members of this large family often have their work confused.
As Charles had connections outside France he was able to continue his lucrative career after the French revolution.
