PORTRAIT OF A LADY WEARING A DARK DRESS
AND PEARL NECKLACE
SAID TO BE SARAH HAMILTON STUART
OF DRUMASPIL DUNGANNON NORTHERN IRELAND
Oil on canvas 25 ¼ x 20 ¾ inches
Astley was baptized at Wem, Shropshire on 6 April 1724, son of Richard Astley, a surgeon and his wife Margaret.
He studied under Thomas Hudson in the early 1740’s at the same time of Reynolds.
Astley travelled to Rome circa 1747, where he knew Richard Wilson.
The following year he visited Florence where he was patronized by Sir Horace Mann. Astley returned to Rome in 1750, where he studied with Mann’s recommendation under Batoni for a brief period.
He returned to Florence in 1751 and painted copies of old masters and a portrait of Mann who then recommended him to Horace Walpole.
He returned to England via Paris in 1752 and set up a successful portrait practice in London and then in Dublin from 1756 to 1759.
He first married a ‘beautiful Irish girl’.
It is said that he earned £3,000 in three years and was able to command 20 guineas for a half-length portrait.
Astley then married Lady Dukinfield- Daniell, a rich widow on 7 December 1759.
She died in 1762 and left him a fortune and the Dukinfield property in Cheshire.
He soon gave up painting but took on J. K. Sherwin as an apprentice to help decorate Schomberg House which he had bought.
In 1777 he retired to his estate, Dukinfield Lodge, Cheshire and died there on 14 November 1787.
