Kerseboom was born in Solingen Rhineland.
He went to Paris where he is said to have studied under Charles Le Brun, which would fit with the soft shading technique exhibited in his portraits.
He then moved to Rome where he stayed and worked for fourteen years. Two of which were spent working for Nicholas Poussin painting figures in his history paintings.
Kerseboom came to Britain in the 1680’s where he found successful patronage from London Society who liked is soft continental style of painting.
He is buried at St. Paul’s, Covent Garden under his original surname of Casaubon.
This is one of his finest quality portraits.
His nephew Johann also became a portrait painter.
