PORTRAIT OF A LADY
WEARING A GREEN DRESS AND RED WRAP
ATTRIBUTED TO FRANCIS HAYMAN RA
Circa 1708 – 1776
Oil on canvas 9 ¾ x 8 ¼ inches
Framed size 13 ½ x 12 inches
Francis Hayman was born in Exeter, Devon.
In 1718 he was apprenticed to the history painter Robert Brown and was first employed as a scenery painter at Drury Lane. Hayman went on to become a painter of genre scenes, portraits
and historical subjects and was also an illustrator.
He taught with Gravelot at St. Martins Lane Academy and painted pavilion decorations for Jonathan Tyers.
During the 1740’s & 50’s he had a successful practice producing conversation pieces, theatrical portraits and small full-lengths.
Hayman was a founder of the Society of Artists in Great Britain in 1760. He was elected a founder member of the Royal Academy in 1768 and became its Librarian in 1771.
Hayman a friend of Hogarth, was particularly successful in anglicizing the French fete- galante type of painting and modifying it to suit the English propensity for portraiture. The young Thomas Gainsborough (1727-88) was among several artists who occasionally painted back grounds for Hayman in the mid 1740’s.
This charming intimate work is typical of the small-scale portraits that Hayman was producing around this date.
He exhibited his work from 1760 to 1772 at the Society of Artists (12), and (6) at the Royal Academy.
Among his pupils were Nathaniel Dance RA, L.F. Abbott, John Taylor, Thomas Gainsborough and William Jefferys.
Hayman died in London on 2 February 1776.
This beautiful and intimate head study is, quite possibly, a member of his family, as it is not composed in the Manner of his normal portrait commissions.
Work in Museums: V & A Museum; National Portrait Gallery, London; Tate; Southampton Art Gallery; National Gallery of Ireland; Yale.
