Northcote was born in Plymouth on 22 October 1746 and baptized on 11 November 1746.
He was the son of Samuel Northcote a watchmaker and optician and his mother sold haberdashery.
Northcote was apprentice to his father’s trade, but showed a talent for art.
He moved to London in 1771 entering the Royal Academy Schools and becoming a pupil of Reynolds in 1771 and then his studio assistant until 1777.
Northcote practised portraiture at Plymouth until he had enough money to go to Italy in 1777.
He visited Rome from 1777 to 1780 where he was asked to give a self-portrait to the Uffizi Gallery Florence.
Northcote returned to England and settled in London 1781.
He exhibited the staggering number of 229 paintings at the Royal Academy, 22 at The British Institution and 22 at the Society of British Artists from 1773 – 1832.
He was elected Associate of the Royal Academy in 1786 and a full member in 1787. His pupils included William Slater and Samuel Hart.
Northcote wrote, ‘Life of Sir Joshua Reynolds’, 1813 and his conversations with Hazlitt and James Ward were published in two volumes 1894 – 1901.
His sitters’ book 1776 – 1831 is in the National Portrait Gallery London.
Northcote died in London on 13 July 1831 and is buried in the new church of St Marylebone.
