PORTRAIT OF AN ELEGANT LADY
WEARING A BIG BLACK HAT
CIRCLE OF SIR JOHN LAVERY
Oval oil on canvas 30 ½ x 25 ½ inches
Framed size 38 ½ x 25 ½ inches
This portrait is very close in style and subject to the work of Sir John Lavery (1856 -1941)
He became a highly fashionable portrait painter of the late Victorian and Edwardian era.
Interestingly there is a portrait of Evelyn Farquhar, wife of Captain Francis Douglas Farquhar signed & dated 1906 by Lavery, wearing a very similar style hat, as in this painting.
The technique of ‘dark on dark’ was very much a feature of his work.
This portrait was originally rectangular but was made into an oval in the mid-20th Century and therefore any signature it may have had, has been lost.
This painting is in a fine 17th Century carved oval frame.
