John Vanderbank (or Van Der Banck) was born in London on 9th September 1694. His father also, John Vanderbank was a tapestry weaver.
John studied at Godfrey Kneller’s Academy from 1711 and in 1720, set up his own Academy in St Martin’s Lane with Louis Cheron. Amongst their pupils were Hogarth, Joseph Highmore, William Kent and Arthur Pond. Vanderbank was an excellent draughtsman and a superb portraitist and by 1720 was attracting a large clientele, often painting full lengths and many are signed and dated. He was fond of smudging the highlights to soften them.
He illustrated books for Don Quixote and also painted many small versions of these dating from 1731 to 1736 to satisfy his creditors. A few wall paintings are known and many drawings suggest an interest in historical subjects, but he did not get much chance to pursue.
High living and a partiality for drink led to him having to flee to France to escape his creditors.
He returned in 1727, although the problems of drink and debt continued.
He died on 23 December 1739 in London and was buried at Marylebone Church.
Amongst his sitters were the sculptor Michael Rysbrack, the Earl of Granville and Sir Isaac Newton.
Many of Vanderbank’s works were reproduced as engravings by John Faber Jnr who studied at Vanderbank’s Academy.
