Listing Information
James Sant was a portrait painter born in Croydon, London in 1820. From the age of 8 he showed a keen interest in art and later studied under John Varley (1778-1842) and Sir Augustus Wall Callcott (1779-1844). On 21 April 1840 he entered the Royal Academy School to finish his training and began to specialise in portraits. He exhibited there regularly and prolifically from 1840-1904. His career took off and he became a highly popular portraitist, eventually becoming Principal Painter in Ordinary to the Queen in 1872. He produced many pictures of the Royals and enjoyed the patronage of many noble and landed families. Portraits by him can be seen in many English country houses today, including highly esteemed portraits of children. He was elected Associate of the Royal Academy in 1861and in 1869 was elected a member of the RA. He retired from the Academy in 1914 and died 12 July 1916.
Examples of his work can be found in many museums and art galleries including the Royal Academy Arts, Tate Gallery, Manchester City Art Gallery, National Portrait Gallery, Oldham Gallery, Southampton City Art Gallery & The Wallace Collection.
The work is housed in its original period giltwood frame which is in excellent condition.
