Maria Verelst (1680-1744) was born in Vienna and was the daughter and pupil of Dutch painter Harman Verelst (1641-1690). She was taken to London aged three by her father and also received lessons from her uncle, Court painter Simon Verelst. Maria was known for painting small portraits on copper as well as life sized portraits. As well as being a successful portrait artist she was also a highly accomplished musician and was fluent inseveral languages. She died in London in 1744.
