Matthew Corbet was born on 20th May 1850 in South Willingham, Lincolnshire. He went on to train at the Slade School of Art in London and the Royal Academy. He started out as a portrait painter but after a visit to Italy where he studied in Rome with Giovanni Costa, he devoted himself exclusively to landscape painting, often of Italian subjects.
Corbet exhibited his work in London from 1871 to 1893 at various venues and he won a prize for a work titled Sunrise, which he sent to the 1889 Exposition Universelle in Paris. He was made an associate member of the Royal Academy in 1902 but sadly died in London on 25 June in the same year.
