Théophile Marie Francoise Lybaert was born in Ghent where he initially studied at the Beaux-Art Academy under the Belgian history painter Theodor Cannell. In 1878 he went to Paris to study under the great Orientalist artist Jean-Léon Gérôme and on his return to Ghent he first became a noted painter of Oriental subjects. He later concentrated on paintings with subjects derived from religious and Flemish history. |
