A quote from the: Vorarlberg Chronicle (translation) is noted below
“Five painters from four generations of family Bertle specific for one and a half centuries, the artistic landscape of the Montafon and for decades even that of the whole country. Founder of this family of artists was Josef Anton Bertle (1796-1858), who was still very much committed to the late baroque forms. His sons Franz (1828-1883) and Jacob (1837-1911) obtained as Nazarenermaler importance on the borders of the Country. Her most famous works are the murals in the parish churches of Schruns and Gaschurn.
Born in Schruns on April 11, 1880 son of Jacob, Hans Bertle, became the best-known representatives of the family of artists. Between 1897 and 1903 he met, among others Nikolaus of Gysi and Wilhelm von Diez at the Munich Academy. Due to the favorable environment for artists Bertle took permanent residence in Munich. Where he was particularly renowned for his portraits which helped him to prominent jobs in the Bavarian Royal Court.
However, a close personal links let him return to his old home again. The ceiling paintings in the parish Schrunser, the numerous designs for large Schrunser parade of 1928 and the home game 'Batlogg' (1932), many landscape and history paintings and poster designs bear witness to his extensive work for the Montafon. His paintings are based on the real master and act generally very picturesque. During World War II he was a war correspondent. The artist died on April 4, 1943; be more connected with the modern art movements son Hannes (1910-1978) continued the artistic tradition. A.R. (Source: Vorarlberg Chronicle)”

Today he is most widely known for his Poster designs which capture the essence of the style and glamour of that period.
He was an extremely fine portrait painter as is illustrated by this very glamorous portrait painted the year before he died.
