John Alexander was born in Scotland. He travelled to Rome and studied under Chiari, returning to Scotland in 1720 and began painting the staircase ceiling at Gordon Castle for the Duke of Gordon.
He engraved George Jamesone’s self-portrait with his wife and child in 1728 and signed the Charter of the Academy of St Luke in 1729.
Just before his death he was painting the Escape of Mary Queen of Scots from Loch Leven Castle, the landscape painted from nature representing an unusual innovation at this time.
