Wax miniature portrait of Ferdinand Franz Wallraf, by Ludwig Hagbold, circa 1822

Signed on the truncation L. Hagbold Fct., in the original box frame

Ferdinand Franz Wallraf (Cologne 1748 – 1824), an outstanding scholar and art collector, had this portrait modelled in wax by the Cologne artist Ludwig Hagbold (1784 – 1846).

Ludwig Hagbold (also Hagbolt) learnt his trade as a wax modeller in Cologne from Kaspar Bernhard Hardy (1726–1819).

Ferdinand Franz Wallraf left his vast collections in 1818 to his native city of Cologne. The Wallraf-Richartz-Museum, named after him, owns his collections of paintings and graphic arts.

Another version of this portrait in an oval frame is in the Cologne Museum (Kölnisches Stadtmuseum, Inv.-Nr. HM 1891/35) . Ludwig Hagbold’s wax portraits are in several German museums.
