Framed together with: Ink inscription on paper: Mrs Morris, as the Lady who posseses this drawing does me the honour to value it from it's being one of my early efforts, and as a Paper at the back of it, written by me at the time of my making it, has been inadvertently torn, I think it right to mention that this portrait of the Brother of Mrs Morris, was drawn by me at Bath in the year 1786, Tho. Lawrence, PRA, Walpole Square, April 9th, 1827.

With a date of 1786 this work was painted by Lawrence at the age of seventeen. The Lawrences lived in Bath from 1780-89 and Kenneth Garlick speculates that the pastel work that the artist produced at this time may have been learnt from William Hoare of Bath.

Robert Morris was born in 1761 and served with the 2nd Nottinghamshire Regiment from 1783 until 1792.

Dr. Kenneth Garlick confirmed the attribution and date of this work in December 1990.
