Willem Verelst was born in London, the son and pupil of John Verelst and Ann Tureng. The Verelsts were an illustrious family of Dutch emegre painters. His grandfather, Harman, was in the service of the Emperor in Vienna, but emigrated to London in 1683.
Willem Verelst painted portraits and conversation pieces both life size and Devis scale. He is considered to have been the best portraitist of the family.
His brother, Simon, was the most famous flower painter of his time.

Willem died at St Christopher le Stocks, London in 1752.
