Samuel Blanchard, son of Joshua Blanchard III and Elizabeth (Hunt) Blanchard, was born in Boston on 29 February 1756. He married Elizabeth Gardner on 3 June 1781 in Malden, Mass.; he died of typhus, aged 57, at Wenham, Mass., on 4 May 1813.

The Cantonese artist known to Westeners as Spoilum is the earliest Chinese 'export' artist whose style can be identified today; his name was also given as 'Spillem' or (as here) 'Spilum'. In the 1770s he was engaged in painting 'reverse-glass' portraits of visiting Western merchants.
