Portrait of a gentleman, said to be Sir Edward Gregory, bust-length, in a blue wrap and a white lace jabot.

Sir Edward Gregory is mentioned in the diary of Samuel Pepys as 'the purser of the largest ship in the Navy, the Sovereign'. It is also recorded that he purchased this post from his predecessor and that this was an accepted way of obtaining a commission or warrant.
