Downman executed a series of portraits of the Wolff family, George and his brother Ernest Wolff, George's two daughters Elizabeth and Matilda, his only son Jens and later also Jen's wife and children. The Wolff family were Danish merchants and consuls in London. Other drawings of the family by Downman are in the Butleigh Court Sketchbooks, now in the British Museum, see G.C. Williamson John Downmna, A.R.A , 1907 pp lii, liv. This watercolour was sold as part of a group of particularly fine early English portrait drawings from a collection originally formed by James A.H. Thursby-Pelham and sold at Christie's in 1995.
