An extremely rare and important Potsdam Goblet of the finest museum quality.

Made for the wedding of Frederick 1st of Prussia to his third wife Sophie Louise of Mecklenberg Schwerin. It bears the royal monogram for Frederick and that of his third bride to verso. They were married on 28th November 1708.

The engraved border is in the arabesque style of Jean Berain and is clearly influenced by the Neues Groeschgen-werk “new grotesque” of contemporary Paul Decker.

The diameter of the foot is 12.5cm

A near identical goblet made for the wedding of Frederick William the first and Sophie Dorothea that differs only in the monograms used may be found in Kunstgewerbemuseum der Stadt Koln, catalogue number F327 and is still exhibited in the Kölnisches Stadtmuseum. This is a signed piece by Johann Christoph Weigel the Elder 1661-1726
