William Stuart was a Victorian painter of still lifes, genre and marine subjects.
He lived in London at Manor House Stepney, Causeway and then Arbour Square, Stepney.
Stuart went on to exhibit his work at the Royal Academy (16); the British Institute and the Royal Society of British Artists from 1849 to 1858.
He specialized in painting still lifes of fruit and flowers and was influenced by the Dutch Old masters.
His use of bold bright colours and exotic fruit make this painting a fine example of his work.
Stuart also painted a few genre scenes including ‘’The Gondola Night’, ‘Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress of Lilliput’ and ‘The Thames off Limehouse’.
