The head and shoulders profile portrait of Pope Pius IX finely carved in white marble, set on a blood-red marble oval background, mounted in turn on a Sienna marble oval, and framed in an ebonised reeded surround.
The Blessed Pope Pius IX (13th May 1792 – 7th February 1878) was the longest reigning elected Pope in the history of the Catholic Church, his Papacy began in 1846 and lasted for a period of 31 years 236 days, he was beatified in 2000. He defined the dogma of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, meaning that she was conceived without original sin. Pius IX was the last Pope to rule as Sovereign of the Papal States, which had fallen completely to nationalist armies by 1870 and were incorporated into the Kingdom of Italy.
