FREDERICK WILLIAM HULME
1816 – 1884 Signed & dated 1850
Oil on canvas 36 ½ x 28 ½ inches
Framed size 44 x 35 ½ inches
Hulme was born at Swinton in Yorkshire and became a painter, illustrator and engraver. He was taught by his mother who painted on porcelain.
He first exhibited in 1841 at the Birmingham Academy.
In 1844 he came to London and worked as an illustrator and engraver. From 1852 to 1884 Hulme exhibited his work at the Royal Academy and at the British institution. It is also known he exhibited paintings at the Royal Society of Artists Birmingham; the Walker Art Gallery Liverpool; and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters.
His subjects were mostly of Wales & Surrey and his paintings were idyllic landscapes, with rustic figures and animals. Hulme’s style is usually clear and fresh in both light and colouring, like the works of William Shayer and Thomas Creswick. He had an excellent sense of composition.
Hulme exhibited two paintings of Pyrford at the Royal Academy, one in 1858 titled, At Lady Farm, Pyrford, Surrey no 897 and the other in 1862 titled, The Churchyard style, Pyrford no 102.
