An oval shaped antique silver box with a tortoiseshell top and bottom. The lid has an inset Charles I silver coin and four decorative mounts with engraved decoration and initials. Length 6.75 cms. Width 4.5 cms (4.75 cms including hinge). Height 1.2 cms. The silver is unmarked and we consider the date to be circa 1710.
This charming box has been well cared for. It’s in very good condition with no signs of restoration. There is a small fault to the tortoiseshell on the lid close to the right end of the hinge. There is a slight variation in height – left side 1.2 cms, right side 1.3 cms approx.

Please note that this item is not new and will show moderate signs of wear commensurate with age. Reflections in the photograph may detract from the true representation of this item.
Grinding tobacco leaves in order to inhale the powder dates from the mid 17th century in Europe however the first snuff boxes don’t seem to have appeared until the reign of William III circa 1695.
