The Great Northern Railway was a British railway company established by the Great Northern Railway Act of 1846. On 1 January 1923 the company lost its identity, as a constituent of the newly formed London and North Eastern Railway.
This box is in fact a cigar and cigarette cabinet and was made in London between 1880 - 1900 and would have been given/bought as a novelty item.
The real coal top hinges open to two main compartments divided by match storage area and strike.
