In all my years as an antique dealer, many of them specialising in Windsor chairs, I have never had a chair like this in stock.
The only time I have ever seen a chair like this was on a television documentary programme about Vincent Van Gogh. It shows him using such a chair in his London apartment in the 1870's.
The sloping arms allowed him to rest his arms whilst painting. It also showed him resting a canvas on the top of the chair, with the cut-out notches to the back hoop holding it in place.
Although there is no evidence this chair belonged to Van Gogh, it has the same unusual design features and were obviously made as a special commission, presumably for use by an artist.
This chair is in ash, elm and beech. With lovely grain patterns to the seat. Turned legs connected by H stretcher.
Seat height 17.25 inches (44 cm).
