Rare Bering Sea Eskimo Clubs of ancient fossil seal penis bone
18 – 19 th Century
These fossil bone clubs were used like a braining stone to dispatch a caught small seal and to avoid making unnecessary holes in the useful skin . They exude ‘sealness’ ; as with other elements of Eskimo hunting technology they reflect the strongly rooted belief among the Bering Sea people that effectiveness in hunting requires a combination of craftsmanship and technology with the use of spiritually compatible materials . Beautiful tools and weapons pleased the ‘Inuas’
