Minor repair to one upright.

On four cabriole legs with outswept arms and a shaped cresting rail. Windsor chairs made from mahogany are very rare and – like this one – often exhibit a sophistication and attention to detail design not usually found in their more “country” cousins. This very unusual chair shares certain characteristics with the well-documented Holkham Hall model of mahogany Windsor, but has some very individual elements as well. The Holkham chairs incorporate similar decorative turnings at the top of each spindle but this chair exhibits a more exuberant design for the top rail and more movement in the carved seat. Furthermore the way the side spindles under the arm-rest lean forwards to compliment the shaped design of the principal arm support is unusual.

Holkham Hall Model: sold by Thomas Coulborn & Sons, 2010.
A similar mid 18th Century important and rare mahogany armchair is illustrated in Michael Harding-Hill’s 'Windsor Chairs: An Illustrated Celebration' (Antique Collectors’ Club, Suffolk, 2003), p.76. Harding-Hill points out that as the legs are joined to the underside of the seat, this chair can be classed as a Windsor chair.
