Item Description / Dealer Expertise

A rare early 19th century mahogany stick barometer signed J. Newman, 122 Regent St, London.

The mahogany case is surmounted by an elaborate moulded cornice to a long trunk terminating in a shaped section with protruding glazed brass cistern cover.

The angled signed silvered dial has a 27 to 31 inch scale marked 'Corrected Scale for Capacities' with rack and pinion vernier and alcohol thermometer.

John Frederick Newman is listed in Banfield's Barometer Makers and Retailers as working at 122 Regent Street from 1827-62. It states 'he made standard and portable barometers for the Ross Antarctic expedition and his meteorological station barometers were installed throughout the British Empire. He exhibited at the Great Exhibition at Crystal Palace in 1851 and was, without doubt, the leading scientific barometer maker of his day. The business was taken over by Negretti & Zambra in 1862.'
