A rare pair of Chinese export Paktong candlesticks with Rococo decoration and detachable drip pans. With spurious marks to imitate English hallmarks. Made in three parts with a ‘fluted’ column and acanthus detail and decorated with a scrolling base.

Paktong is a rare, scarce and highly-prized Chinese alloy combining copper, zinc, nickel. Paktong was imported in small quantities during the 18th century and was used by European craftsmen to make domestic objects in imitation of silverware. The vital silver-coloured ingredient, nickel, was not identified in the west until the second half of the 18th century.
