Each of this very unusual pair of boxes has a pierced, arched cresting over a back panel with pierced fret-work inscription, and a box with lift-up lid and all-over fretwork decoration below. One box is inscribed "A. Earea, Maker, London", with the pierced inscription backed with red and green fabric; the other box is inscribed "Hannah Earea, London", with this inscription backed with deep red velvet. "Earea" is an unusual name, found almost exclusively in Essex. There is a birth record for Arthur Earea, who was born in Essex in 1851. In the Parish records of St Olave's (City of London) there is an entry recording the marriage of Hannah Bush to Arthur Earea in 1888. Hannah Bush was also born in Essex. It is very possible that this couple are the Arthur and Hannah recorded on our boxes, and that Arthur made the boxes as a love token. Arthur's box: Height 13 1/4" Width 9" Depth 6 3/4" Hannah's box: Height 12" Width 9" Depth 6"
