A fine Railwayana Stevengraph silk woven picture of a L.N.W.R. 'Prince of Wales' class locomotive (1911).This is cataloged as STG#198 in Austin Sprake's definitive work (see below for details). The picture is contained in its original, printed mount (matte) bearing the title 'The Present Time' under the inscription 'Woven in Silk'.
This picture was produced by Thomas Stevens (1828-1888), a 19th-century weaver from Coventry, famous for his invention of the stevengraph, a woven silk picture.
He exhibited internationally in America, France and Holland, winning some 30 medals and diplomas. The firm continued long after his death in 1888, although production slowed to a trickle by the time the First World War started.
Excellent undamaged condition with good colours. There is a photocopy of a Steven's back label in the frame. This is not original and there would not have been a back label applied to a Stevengraph of this date.
