A very fine early 19th century Regency period mahogany open armchair, of broad proportions.

English, circa 1820

Dimensions:

Depth: 63 cm / 25 in
Width: 61 cm / 24 in
Height: 87 cm / 34.25 in
Seat height: 47 cm / 18.5 in

Finely figured 'flame' mahogany veneered tablet back, resting above a pair of voluted Ionic capitals; the scrolled arms over reeded tapered terminals; the green horsehair upholstered and brass moulding beaded seats, above the moulded seatrails centred with anthemion-carved tablets; raised on turned and reeded fore legs and sabre back supports.

The chair, with Egyptian reed-wreathed legs, is designed in the early 19th Century 'French antique' fashion promoted by the connoisseur Thomas Hope (d.1832) and popularised by R. Ackermann's Repository of Arts, 1810. The distinctive design of the present chairs was introduced by the Gillows firm in the early 19th century and dominated their production in the 1820s and 1830s.
Fine antique condition, minor restorations.
