Regency mahogany x-frame stool attributed to Gillows of Lancaster
c. 1810 England
Offered by Millington Adams
This ‘Grecian’ stool corresponds to examples supplied in 1812 by Gillows for Wilbraham Egerton at Tatton Park, Cheshire. Further stools of this model were supplied to William, 2nd Baron Bolton (1782-1850) for Hackwood Park, Hamsphire and an almost identical stool supplied to William, 4th Earl Fitzwilliam (d. 1833) , Wentworth Woodhouse. It is probable that this stool may have been part of a commission for the influential diplomat, Alleyne Fitzherbert, 1st Baron St. Helens (d. 1839) of Tissington Hall, Derbyshire and Grafton Street, London. A group of Gillows furniture associated with the inscription ‘FitzHerbert’ was identified in 2009, this was made by Gillows in two batches, circa 1810-15 and another some 10-15 years later. This stool stylistically would have been produced in the first batch of this furniture.
