A superb nest of four tables with specimen hardwood tops attributable to Gillows of Lancaster. The three largest tables each with a central veneered panel bordered by contrasting cross banding; the smallest table similar except with additionally an inlaid chess board and a concave lower shelf. The tables are supported on ring turned bamboo pattern mahogany legs with cross stretchers. Specimen timbers include rosewood, West Indian satinwood, partridge wood, amboyna and burr maple. The design for these tables is shown in the Gillows Estimate & Sketch Book circa 1825 and the high quality of construction and timbers used would almost certainly suggest that they came from the Gillows workshops in Lancaster.

Gillows of Lancaster were probably the most celebrated of all English furniture makers. They were established in the early 18th century, and pieces made by Gillows are very desirable and extremely sought after.
Excellent. Minor restorations, cleaning & waxing.
